Dive Terminology Defined
Approach or hurdle – how a diver walks to the end of a board to help build momentum
- "3 steps, knee up, jump to the end, arm circle & take off"
Fall vs dive – fall off the board keeping legs straight; dive off the board you bend your knees to jump
sammy – slang term for chamois, a small absorbent towel. These can be purchased in fun colors and even found tie-dyed.
2 to 3 purposes of sammies:
- drying yourself off to help grip legs for a good position
- Sometimes divers will do a sitting rolling dive off high dive and the Sammy can be put down on the board to make the board more comfortable
- Look like a pro throwing it down off the diving board to the deck before doing for a dive
Pool toe – extremely painful (according to my kids), top layers of skin have rubbed off caused by scraping on dive board
- Possible treatment of pool toe- apply Neosporin & bandaids. Can use waterproof adhesive tape to help bandaid stay in place. Divers can also wear socks during dive practice.
BINGO! – All the divers go wild and shout "bingo" will lots of excitement. This happens during a dive when the judges' scores all match each other.
Baulk – once a diver starts their approach, the diver must complete the dive. If diver pauses, it’s considered a baulk. The ref will call the baulk and scores will be recorded minus 2 points. Judges will display scores they determine from the dive as normal but the announcer removes 2 points from each dive as they announce scores.
“Thank you, diver.” – The announcer will use this phrase to tell diver they didn’t completed the announced dive. This determination results in a zero score for the dive.
