Tips for Parents
DRRA Dive Team is in Division 1 this year (2024). NVSL (Northern Virginia Swimmming League) seeds all league dive teams into different divisions (1-8) for more equal competitions between teams. A Meets will be versus other Dive Teams in our current division. B Meets can be scheduled with teams from any division.
DRRA has such a fabulously large dive team that we have both A and B dive meets. An email goes out Thursdays (-ish) to divers being offered a spot at the upcoming Tuesday A Meet. Divers need to accept or decline their spot by the end of the day Saturday so other divers can be offered a position instead. “Bubble” divers are divers that are possibly going to dive at the A Meet. A Meet divers do not dive at that week’s B Meets to allow for all divers to have an opportunity to dive at meets.
**All divers must sign their meet entry sheet prior to the meet starting.**
NVSL rule is that freshman are allowed to complete falls & jumps; DRRA chooses not to use jumps in A meets
Max of 32 divers go to A Meet
There are 4 classes of competition (age groups):
Freshman – 10 & under
Juniors – 11 & 12
Intermediates – 13 & 14
Seniors – 15-18
What dives are required for each group in an A meet:
Freshman (10 & under), 3 dives total
- 2 voluntary (required) & 1 optional
- Forward dive
- Backward dive
- Optional dive
Juniors (11 & 12 year olds), 4 dives total
- 2 voluntary (required) & 2 optional
- Forward dive in diver’s chosen position
- Back dive in diver’s chosen position
- 2 optional dives from different categories from each other
Intermediates (13 & 14 year olds), 5 dives total
- 2 voluntary & 3 optional
- Forward dive in diver’s chosen position
- Back dive in diver’s chosen position
- 3 optional dives from different categories from each other
Seniors (15-18 year olds), 6 dives total
- 3 voluntary & 3 optional
- Forward dive in diver’s chosen position
- Back dive in diver’s chosen position
- inward dive in diver's chosen position
- 3 optional dives from different categories from each other
When volunteering at dive meets, there is no need to wear particular colored clothes. Only refs wear white shirt & blue shorts.
Referee has final say of failed dives & the final say in determining if the diver completed announced dive.
For all dives that end with feet entering the water, divers are supposed to have their arms at their side when entering the water. If the diver does not have their hands at their side, there is a maximum score of 4 1/2.
Swim suits
Team suits are available from Sport Fair however these are not required. Rules for A Meets include...
- Boys may not have suits that go over the naval or extend past their knees.
- Girls may not have suits that have a tie-back or lace-up, cover their neck, go past their shoulder or extend below their knee.
